You’ve got a sweet tooth, you bought your favourite morsel from the corner store and carried it home. It’s got dried pineapple from South America, macadamias from Madagascar and ted nugent from Michigan…. If we ignore your own physical exertion, what’s your carbon footprint?… Zero! All you did was eat it! In no way did you force someone to refine oil into that wrapper, grow sugarcane or burn gallons of fuel shipping across oceans.
Planned obsolescence as an industry standard is price fixing. Its the legal, hidden equivalent to retailers jacking their prices in unison. Purchases: remember its not just the price, but how much you’re getting. Take something like dish soap. The water and container aren’t of any use to you, so lets assume when you buy a container of dish soap you are really just after a quantity of soap ingredients. (more…)
Researching what i could do with my garbage, I found that most sources are granola bloggers who’ve really just taken this opportunity to brag about how they compost on their bicycles, make art from old pop cans and buy nothing. Read an interesting article, here in Ontario we are unable to process all our recycled goods. So we ship 40000 tonnes of plastic to China to be melted down and shipped back to us as cheap toys and such. Much of this tonnage is comprised of the water bottles that they use to sell us tap water with european names (more…)
Live in a cold climate, a common cityscape has tall buildings shooting steam up into the sky during extreme cold to vent pressure in their heating systems. Solutions? Build a green roof, seal the structure in for winter, and heat it with the excess steam during cold snaps. You could also process and feed the energy back into the building. Maybe have it turn a small generator that charges the boss’s laptop. (more…)
